Automatic refractometers automatically measure the refractive index of a sample. A light source, usually a long-life LED, is focused onto a prism surface via a lens system. An interference filter guarantees the specified wavelength.

Non-contact tonometry (or air-puff tonometry) is different from pneumatonometry and was invented by Bernard Grolman of Reichert, Inc (formerly American Optical). It uses a rapid air pulse to applanate (flatten) the cornea. Corneal applanation is detected via an electro-optical system. Intraocular pressure is estimated by detecting the force of the air jet at the instance of applanation.Historically, non-contact tonometers were not considered to be an accurate way to measure IOP but instead a fast and simple way to screen for high IOP. However, modern non-contact tonometers have been shown to correlate well with Goldmann tonometry measurements and are particularly useful for measuring IOP in children and other non-compliant patient groups.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical signal acquisition and processing method. It captures micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within optical scattering media (e.g., biological tissue). Optical coherence tomography is an interferometric technique, typically employing near-infrared light. The use of relatively long wavelength light allows it to penetrate into the scattering medium. Confocal microscopy , another similar technique, typically penetrates less deeply into the sample.Depending on the properties of the light source (superluminescent diodes ultrashort pulsed lasers supercontinuum lasers have been employed), optical coherence tomography has achieved sub-micrometer resolution (with very wide-spectrum sources emitting over a ~100 nm wavelength range)

Corneal topography, also known as photokeratoscopy or videokeratography, is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye. The three-dimensional map is therefore a valuable aid to plan refractive surgery such as LASIK, and evaluating its results; or in assessing the fit of contact lenses.

Laser peripheral iridotomy is a treatment for narrow angle glaucoma. The doctor uses an Nd:YAG laser to create a small hole in the peripheral iris. This improves the circulation of fluid inside the eye and widens the anterior chamber angle. Fluid which is produced behind the iris has easier access to the eye’s internal drainage system. Sometimes this lowers the intraocular pressure, but that is not the primary goal of laser peripheral iridotomy. The primary goal of the procedure is to lessens the risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma.
